You are invited to consider applying for a position as an ER Nocturnist with the Boston VA Healthcare System at an emergency room rated #1 in the country for patients not leaving without being seen, due to the excellent flow process in place. This is a great opportunity for someone seeking work/life balance, and where time could be protected if you have research grant money and wish to continue that work. How shifts are scheduled and how many shifts you want to cover is negotiable and provides the flexibility to meet any life style. An academic appointment may be available for EM-trained physicians.

Your shifts will run 6 pm to 7:30 am during which you will see about 10-11 patients per night with an average of 8-10 patient encounters occurring 6 pm to 10 pm, during which time you’ll have double coverage and, 2.5 patients after midnight. In addition to nursing and other support staff, the department also enjoys coverage by PA students. 2 – 3 shifts per week is the goal which will allow you plenty of time off and days off are negotiable and can be flexible. There may also be some time protected for administrative duties.

The Emergency Department consists of 13 beds and sees about 14.5K visit per year and most cases involve medicine-related and orthopedic cases. The department does not see trauma, OB, or pediatric cases. The department has an excellent nursing staff and works as a team so someone who wants to be a team player will be the best fit.

Federal Retirement Plan:

  • VA employees are covered by the Federal Employees Retirement System (FERS). FERS is a three-tiered retirement plan composed of 1) Social Security benefits; 2) FERS-FRAE basic benefits (pension); and 3) Thrift Savings Plan (TSP) which is a 401K-type plan
  • How is the pension funded? VA employees hired after January 1, 2014 automatically contribute 4.4% of their salary each pay period and the VA contributes 8.3% of the employee's salary each pay period for a total annual contribution percentage equal to 12.7% of the employee's salary
  • Similar to the 401(k) savings plans widely available in the private sector, the TSP allows employees to tax defer a portion of their income each year, subject to the requirements of the Internal Revenue Service. For calendar year 2016, employees under the age of 50 may contribute up to $18,000, while those over age 50 are eligible to make catch-up contributions that allow them to defer up to $24,000
  • The Federal Government also provides an automatic basic contribution (1% of salary) and up to 4% of salary in matching contributions, depending on the amount of the employee contribution
  • For retired military personnel, these benefits are in addition to full monthly retirement pay or pension
  • In addition to FERS, VA provides health care insurance coverage for retired personnel
  • Disability Retirement
  • Employees are vested in a federal pension after only 5 years' service
