Fellowship Opportunity – Cardiac Surgery

The University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston, Department of Advanced Cardiothoracic Therapies and Transplantation, Program for Advanced Heart Failure, has 2 Cardiac Surgery fellowship positions available starting in July 2017. This fellowship provides extensive experience in the management of patients with end stage heart failure. There is a programmatic commitment to providing trainees with a broad exposure in intra-operative decision making and the technical aspects of surgical techniques. Other responsibilities would include the pre-operative evaluation of patients admitted and post-operative care, both in the intensive care unit and the clinic. Opportunities for clinical research are also available.  Duties during the rotation will include patient care responsibilities with cardiovascular surgery patients, heart, heart-lung, and lung transplant procedures and the insertion of organ procurement and mechanical circulatory support devices.

At this time, the fellowship is not ACGME accredited. The goal of the program is to produce outstanding Advanced Heart Failure Cardiac surgeons who excel in all areas of core competencies to include: (a) patient care, (b) medical knowledge, (c) practice-based learning and improvement, (d) interpersonal and communication skills, (e) professionalism, and (f) systems-based practice.
