Job Details

Baystate Health, a Truven® Award–winning healthcare system and home of the University of Massachusetts Medical School-Baystate, is searching for an experienced cardiac surgeon to join Baystate Health’s award winning Heart & Vascular Program as Chief of Cardiac Surgery.

This opportunity features:

  • Direct, lead, and mentor the Heart and Vascular cardiac surgery team that is ranked among the top 15 hospitals in America for heart surgery by Consumer Reports
  • Opportunity to practice clinically in a growing, technologically advanced cardiac surgery practice
  • Ability to promote scholarship, including clinical, QI and outcomes-based research, and to provide scholarly mentorship to the team
  • A key leadership role in the Heart and Vascular team, collaborating with leaders within our system and other regional hospitals and providers to grow the Heart and Vascular Program across Western MA

The ideal candidate should be a nationally-recognized cardiac surgeon with the ability to lead a high-volume and growing program that is top ranked for quality and outcomes and is the sole cardiac surgery throughout Western MA.  Candidates should have experience as a clinician-educator/researcher with outstanding clinical skills, and will qualify as an associate professor or professor at UMASS Medical School-Baystate.  In addition to exceptional clinical practice, foci of this position will include leadership around quality and patient safety, patient experience, value, and academics. Ongoing program development, research and regulatory compliance are expected.

Housed in a new patient tower that includes dedicated CV operating suites with advanced imaging, The Heart and Vascular Program at Baystate Health is among the best in the nation for quality and serves Baystate Medical Center, an academic 700+ bed facility, as well as our network of community hospitals.  A truly regional cardiac surgery program, Baystate Medical Center performs more than 80% of cardiac surgery for the residents of western MA, and is amongst the busiest in the state for cardiac surgery and PCI by volume. There is an active TAVR program, with initiation of VAD and percutaneous mitral therapy in place. Baystate Medical Center is one of only two hospitals in the state, and one of only 15 in the country to earn a top score from Consumer Reports for cardiac surgery.

Baystate Medical Center was recently recognized as the #5 overall “Major Teaching Hospital” in Thompson Reuters, and also achieved elite distinction as one of 34 “High Performing” hospitals in America from US News & World Report in 2015. Baystate Health consistently ranks among the nation’s top hospitals and healthcare organizations. As a not-for-profit, mission-driven, integrated health system, Baystate Health serves a population of more than 750,000 people in communities across western Massachusetts.  Patient-centered care is at the core of Baystate Health’s culture. We are committed to hiring clinicians who value a culture of compassion and appreciate diversity—while delivering a higher state of caring.
